Sprained Ankle Recovery Time

What is the typical recovery time for a sprained ankle?

Your ankles contain several ligaments that help hold together the bones in these joints. If the ankle is twisted or rolled too far into an awkward position, one or more of these ligaments can stretch and tear. This is known as a sprained ankle.

Sprained ankles are common injuries that are frequently associated with athletes but can affect anyone who puts weight on their foot incorrectly. It can even happen during a simple walk if you slip off the sidewalk or step into a hole.

Treatments for sprained ankles vary depending on the severity. Very minor sprains can recover after a few days of rest, but many people with sprained ankles will need some form of professional treatment. One treatment that can benefit people with all types of sprained ankles is physical therapy.

How long does it take to recover from a sprained ankle?

Recovery from a sprained ankle varies with each individual. The severity of the sprain, your age, your weight and your medical history all factor into how long it takes to recover. Whether you’re receiving professional treatment also factors into your recovery time. Different grades of sprains measure the severity of the sprain and estimate the recovery time. These are:

  • Grade 1 sprains — These are mild stretches of the ligament with no noticeable tearing. They usually require no more than one to three weeks for recovery
  • Grade 2 sprains — These sprains involve a partial tear to the ligament. They can require as much as six weeks for recovery.
  • Grade 3 sprains — These are very serious total tears of the ligament. They can require several months for recovery. Often, surgery is needed to repair the ligament with a grade 3 sprain.

Your doctor can examine your ankle and determine the severity of the sprain. Whether it’s a grade 1, 2 or 3, they’ll likely recommend physical therapy as part of your complete treatment.
