What causes ankle injuries?

Over a million people visit emergency rooms every year because of ankle injuries. This is due to the fact that the ankle carries a large portion of the body weight, so events like sudden impact, running on uneven surfaces, tripping, falling, landing awkwardly, rolling, twisting or rotating the ankle can often lead to injury.

If you have experienced any of these events and are starting to experience pain, swelling, bruising or an inability to bear weight on your leg, it is important to see a doctor. A medical professional is needed to evaluate your injury and determine the treatment best suited for treating your specific condition. To learn about the different types of ankle injuries and how SOL Physical Therapy + Performance can help you find relief, read the following article.

Types of ankle injuries

The type of ankle injury you have is determined by the kind of tissue that is damaged, whether it’s ligament, bone or tendon. The most common types of ankle injuries include:

  • Sprain — An ankle sprain occurs when you twist your ankle beyond its limits, causing it to stretch or tear the ligaments (tissue responsible for connecting the ankle bone together).

  • Fracture — A fracture develops when one of the three bones in the ankle (the tibia, fibula and talus) wholly or partially break often caused by rolling or twisting the ankle due to sudden impact or tripping and falling.
  • Strain — An ankle strain is a stretch or tear in the muscles or tendons that most likely started after a routine activity and is associated with symptoms such as pain, weakness and muscle spasms.
