What’s causing your headaches?

Headaches are a common ailment and we can safely say that everyone has experienced a headache at least once in their lives. According to the National Headache Foundation, over 45 million Americans suffer from chronic, recurring headaches. Cranial tissues are very sensitive to nerve irritation that can be caused by a multitude of factors resulting in headaches. There has been 150 headache categories established.

Things like tooth infections, dehydration, muscle tension, tumors, meningeal infections, sinus infections, hormonal imbalance and many other things can cause headaches, thus, the reason for many different types of headaches.

If you are suffering from a chronic recurring headache, it is important that you get evaluated by a physician to properly diagnose you and review treatment options. Chiropractic care is highly effective in treating certain types of headaches and is more effective than prescription and over the counter medications for cervicogenic and tension type headaches. A Systematic Review of Manual Therapies for Migraine, by Chaibi and Tuchin, shows that Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy is equally as effective as propranolol and topiramate, in the prophylactic management of migraine.

Many of the causes can be addressed with manual therapy, so it’s critical to find out what is causing your headaches and explore conservative treatment options.
