Accountability Group Fitness

Three reasons you should find an accountability buddy in small-group fitness

When it comes to exercise and fitness, some people are self-motivators. These are the people who can drag themselves out of bed at 5 a.m. without hitting the snooze button. They will exercise in the rain or the cold without a second thought as to how warm the bed they left was.

As for the rest of us who like to relax and sleep in, having an accountability buddy may be just what we need to keep up motivation. Join us as we explore some of the main reasons you should want to find an accountability buddy.

1. Similar athletic abilities

You want to be able to relate to your accountability buddy. That may be difficult to work alongside if your skill sets are vastly different. A weekend warrior and a former collegiate athlete will most likely have different fitness goals. Having someone who is going through roughly the same journey as you can help you both work through plateaus and encourage each other in a small-group fitness setting.

Accountability buddies do not need to be the same:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Height
  • Weight

2. Lighthearted competition

Part of an accountability partner’s role is pushing each other to be better. Sometimes all it takes is a wager of who will pay for the sports drinks after to bring out that extra gear. Who can put in one more rep? Who can finish half a second faster? Who can continue the maximum effort longer? You want someone to not only just be accountable to, but someone who will push you further.

3. A serious desire to improve

Maybe you’re of the mindset that three small-group fitness sessions a week is the ideal. For other people, three sessions a month is where you’re more comfortable. The important thing is to find an accountability buddy who is as serious are you in taking the fitness journey together. You don’t want to be frustrated by someone who may not take fitness as seriously as you would, but you also would not want to be intimidated by someone who is more intense than what would be comfortable for you.
