ELDOA Method

What The Heck Is An ELDOA?

Designed by French osteopath Guy Voyer DO, the ELDOA “Etirements Longitudinaux avec Decoaptition Osteo-Articulaire” (translated in english as  “Longitudinal Osteo-Articular Decoaptation of the Spine”), are postural self normalizing techniques that utilize myofascial stretching to widen the space within a pair of joints. As the ELDOA (i.e. postural stretches) ‘create’ space, there is an improvement in joint mechanics, increased blood flow, reduced pressure on the discs, a reduction of pain, spinal disc rehydration, better muscle tone, improved posture, and a sense of well being and awareness.

The Human Condition

Human beings are the only creatures on earth that navigate gravity with a vertical spine.  Gravity can be very cruel.  Whenever the body is in a vertical position, gravity causes compressive forces through all the joints.  Gravity of course is necessary to keep us attached to mother earth and to aid many bodily functions; however gravity can also be destructive especially when combined with poor posture, work, athletics and exercise.

Most back pain issues stem from some type of compression either from an accident, sitting at your computer all day working, staring at your phone texting, all types of bad posture and or congenital scoliosis. So, how then to reverse the compression?  Researchers have found that the ELDOAs greatly help and minimize the degree of disc bulges and other back pain issues by working with the body as a whole; not just the age old model of one vertebra in relation to the next but rather in terms of the whole of the spine in relation to all of the body.

“Fascial Stretching” and the ELDOA Method

Fascia is:

  • in every movement that you make.
  • the skin of a structure that gives it shape and structural integrity and encases your body.
  • permeates everyone of your muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics, organs, glands, sclera of the eye, dura meter of the cranium/brain, and dura meter of the spinal cord.
  • connects your organs to your ribs to your muscles and all the bones to each other.
  • enables you to maintain correct posture and prevents muscles from tearing.
  • unifying element of all tissues.
  • composed mostly of water, two kinds of protein called collagen and elastin, and proteoglycans(protein and carbohydrates).-collagen(protein) makes up about 30% of the body and provides much of its structural support.-elastin is structural and elastic and returns to its original shape after being stretched.-proteoglycans hold the water that keeps the fascia supple(glucosamine and chondroitin are proteoglycans).

Tight fascia compresses nerves in an area which leads to nerve deficiency and translates into muscle weakness, joint pain, numbness, tingling, or pain down the arm, impaired circulation, increased inflammation, then body produces excess scar tissue. The goal of each ELDOA exercise is to create fascial tension above and below the joint or disc that one is trying to “open up” or decompress.
